When the CBS reminder appears in iDrive, an oil service is due within the timeframe shown. At roughly 100 percent remaining, oil life is full and no service is needed. As the percentage drops, the system works through color-coded reminders before reaching the service-due notification. Driving past a CBS oil service reminder for an extended period means the engine is running on oil that has been calculated to be beyond its reliable service life for your specific driving pattern.

Time matters even when mileage is low. A BMW that is driven infrequently but has had the same oil for more than two years should have that oil changed regardless of what the CBS system shows. Oil degrades chemically over time through oxidation even when it is not being used heavily. The CBS system tracks active driving data and does not fully account for time-based degradation in low-mileage situations.
